Music video analysis - Links between visuals and music

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Parallel narratives - Past, present and possible future
Blending of old and new footage with new footage mostly being performance
As the video reaches its climax it cuts back and forth to old and new footage as the beat increases
Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit
Footage of performance and the old man almost blends together seamlessly.
Whenever it comes to the chorus all extras and performers mimic their body movement to the beat of the song.

Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Completely narrative driven video
Homage to 70's cop shows
Mise en scene used signifies the narrative is set in the 70's i.e. costumes, vehicles etc

Eminem - Stan
Lyrics clearly tell a story from two perspectives
The lip sync is not visually performed with a choreographed dance but as a man writing a letter
The artist is not a main feature of this story
It tells the other side - the fandom perspective

Guns N' Roses - November Rain
The lyrics have a relation with the visual narrative as shown with the line "Because nothing lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change" proceeds with a grand mise en scene showcasing expensive sets for an expensive wedding with a bride whose worrisome facial expression connotes  her "heart can change".
Dress codes fit the conventional rebelliousness of Rock as shown with Guitarist slash is performing a guitar solo in an original style with shits opened. He is as usual donning his signature frizzy long hair further associating one item to his star sign proving audience to associate him with his hair in order to make his star image memorable.
Björk - All is full of love
A clear message of humanity is being put under the microscope by the music video as it depicts an android finding love - the most human quality. Narrative and performance is almost blended as unlike other music videos it does not cut between performance and narrative as the two are embedded together with the android lip syncing to the song. The video not only depicts the love between two artificial beings but also a homosexual one at that. The message reflects that our world mostly forbids homosexual relationships, this video makes it clear that anything from even a robot, an amalgam of nuts, bolts, metal and plastic, can find love, this is especially emphasized as the beginning of the video focuses a lot on the construction of the android. If a series of plastic and metal can find love so can homosexuals as well as anyone and anything as shown by the title of the song "All is full of love".
GOTYE - Somebody that i used to know
The video is practically all performance based. The lyrics tell a story of two lovers post break up reflecting over their long and flawed relationship. The song is post modern as there is no clear 'truth' only discourses, both construct each other as the culprit, for the majority we get the males view of the relationship claiming she "felt so happy you could die" it is followed with the woman's view claiming he "screwed me over", the truth of their relationship is ambiguous and the two discourses blur the lines from truth and reality making it post modern. The mise en scene is composed of a single wall with abstract cubist art all over. We see this cubist art form on the naked body of the male as it soon covers his entire body making him camouflage with the background art. The body art is also visible on the woman however as the song reaches the resolution the body art slowly fades from her till there is nothing left. The message is that she was still apart of his life and on his mind and as she puts it he could not "let go" however now she is 'no longer part of the picture' meaning she is no longer a part of his life. It can be noted that cubist was a form of art in the postmodern art movement further exemplifying this video as post modernist.
