Hammer films

Hammer Films
  • Hammer films is one of the oldest film studios in the world having been founded on the 5th of November 1934
  • Hammer is synonymous with horror, after defining the genre in Britain with classics such as DraculaThe Curse of Frankenstein and The Mummy, which spawned numerous sequels. However, only 1/3rd of Hammer films were horror! The company tackled other genres, including psychological thrillers, sci-fi, noir and historical epic.
  • Hammer films is widely known for their Gothic movies instantly recognizable due to the unique posters that were made however does hold negative representation of women.
  • Throughout there have been objectifying and sexualised images of women in many of their posters such as Dracula, Kiss of the vampire, when dinosaurs walked the earth etc. This may be the male gaze being used to attract a larger male audience however it has become the word of controversy.
  • It is a known fact that model Susan Denberg was solely chosen to play the lead actress for the Hammer film movie "Frankenstein created woman" due to her good looks. This was further evidenced when she was dubbed over due to her strong Austrian accent going to show she was only casted for her looks. This could be saying that women have to be attractive to gain the male audience for Hammer Horror films.
  •   The irony is that Hammer films is known for creating grotesquely horrifying male monsters however the female ones such as Countess Dracula, the Mummy are the only ones to be sexualised even when they are classed as monsters.
