Pinks music video for her song “Stupid girls” was released
in 2006 directed by David Myers. It’s a depiction of various tropes and norms
that a majority or handful of women (labelled as “stupid girls” in this song)
undergo due to the influence of the media, trends and celebrities of that
period.
Our video opens with a little girl watching TV. The binary
opposition comes into play as and an Angel and Devil appears over each of the
girls shoulder. The angel wants to prevent the girl following the Medias
representation of women whereas the devils wants the girls to conform and
become those representations. The angel donning a stylised short dyed hair
normally associated with males and the devil acquiring long straight dark hair
wearing make-up. From what we talked about before the devil seems to be an accurate
representation of what a stereotypical women is meant to look like also note
that all the various stereotypes Pink plays are all seen through the TV, this
and the physical appearance of the devil is possibly commenting on the fact
that either Society or the media (or both influencing each other) in general is
the real enemy.
The TV begins to show a black and white footage of an all-female
classroom with the word “Etiquette” written on the whiteboard. Quite clearly
this is a mocking a pre modernist class teaching women how to abide by their
customary code/behaviour in society. This is commenting on how misogynistic
representations of women have been around throughout the past and yet nothing
has changed.
Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Britney Spears and Mary Kate
Olsen etc are all celebs of the early 2000s who influenced young girls to follow
their toxic lifestyles as shown in the video, just to list a few: wearing
expensive designer clothes, acting like a hooligan, adopting little dogs,
featuring as back up dancers in male songs, intentionally releasing a sex tape
and the age all classic bikini car wash.
The little girl laughing at Pink walking into a glass door
directly reflect the uses and gratification theory as the girls gets a laugh
from it normalizing this attitude that female humour lies in making an idiot
out of yourself.
